Shenzhen iN City Plaza, formerly known as “CITIC City Plaza,” was first introduced in 2002 with the positioning of being “the essence of Asian commerce,” becoming Shenzhen’s first true shopping mall. It was not only a commercial landmark that witnessed the city’s development, but also a place filled with the memories of a generation of Shenzhen residents. However, over time, issues such as aging facilities and limited functional scenarios became increasingly apparent. This once-prominent commercial landmark gradually lost its vitality, fading into the margins of public memory. Revitalizing foot traffic and restoring its appeal became an urgent challenge—making a comprehensive transformation inevitable.
After one year and five months of closure for renovation, the 73,000-square-meter commercial complex has been revitalized with 350 stores, covering a wide range of sectors including retail, dining, entertainment, social spaces, and sports.

The design transforms a conventional shopping mall into a vibrant, contemporary retail destination through a comprehensive architectural and interior renovation. A dramatic multi-storey atrium forms the heart of the space, connecting different levels through sculptural escalators, fluid balconies, and sweeping curved lines. Warm metallic finishes, soft integrated lighting, and refined material palettes create an elegant and inviting atmosphere. The revitalised spatial experience improves visual connectivity, encourages movement and exploration, and elevates the overall shopping environment.

The design transforms a dark, massive basement into a bright, vibrant commercial destination by introducing skylights and integrating the existing sunken plaza. Geometric roof openings bring natural daylight deep into the space, while layered ceiling forms and concealed linear lighting create depth and visual continuity. Integrated greenery softens the architectural lines, bringing nature into the retail environment. The revitalised open-plan layout enhances circulation, visibility, and the overall visitor experience.
Transforming a conventional department store into a vibrant lifestyle and culinary destination, the design integrates sculptural ceiling features, suspended greenery, Cantonese-inspired cultural elements, and dynamic lighting to create an immersive environment. Open layouts, contemporary food kiosks, and warm material palettes encourage exploration, celebrate local identity, and redefine shopping as an engaging social and culinary experience.
